Key facts

  • From 20 September 2026 the full Age Pension is $1,237.70 a fortnight single and $1,866.00 for a couple combined.
  • A single homeowner gets the full pension with assets up to $333,000; a couple, $499,000 combined.
  • Every $1,000 of assets over the limit reduces the pension by $3 a fortnight.
  • Income over $226.00 a fortnight (single) reduces the pension by 50 cents per dollar; savings and shares are counted using deeming.
  • You're paid the lower of the income test and assets test results.

How it's worked out

  1. Deemed income: financial assets are assumed to earn 1.75% up to $66,800 ($110,600 for a couple) and 3.75% above.
  2. Income test: the maximum rate less 50 cents for each dollar of income over $226.00 a fortnight ($396.00 combined for a couple, 25 cents each).
  3. Assets test: the maximum rate less $19.50 a year ($0.75 a fortnight) for every full $250 of assets over the full-pension limit.
  4. You get the lower of the two.

Limits used

Full pension: $1,237.70 a fortnight single, $1,866.00 for a couple. Assets limits and cut-offs are on the Age Pension rates page.

The Work Bonus is applied as $300 of each person's wages a fortnight; a built-up Work Bonus balance (up to $11,800) can exempt more for a while. The estimate doesn't include Rent Assistance, transitional rates, couples where only one partner is pension age, or special rules for income streams, gifting and granny flats.

Common questions

How is the Age Pension calculated?

Services Australia works out your pension under the income test and the assets test, and pays the lower result. Financial assets are counted under both: at their value in the assets test, and as deemed income in the income test.

How much do assets reduce the Age Pension?

By $3 a fortnight for every $1,000 over the full-pension limit (worked out as $19.50 a year for every $250). For a single homeowner the limit is $333,000.

How much can I have in the bank and still get the pension?

A single homeowner with only bank savings gets the full pension up to $333,000 of assets and a part pension up to $745,750, if the income test (deeming on the savings) doesn't reduce it first.

Is my home counted?

No. Your principal home isn't counted in the assets test, but being a homeowner gives a lower assets limit.

How does the Work Bonus work?

The first $300.00 of each pensioner's employment income a fortnight isn't counted in the income test. If you earn less, the unused part builds a balance of up to $11,800 that covers later earnings.
