How it works

Common questions

What is time and a half?

1.5 times your ordinary hourly rate. On $27.81 an hour (the adult retail Level 1 rate) time and a half is $41.72.

How do I calculate time and a half?

Multiply your hourly rate by 1.5. For double time multiply by 2, and for double time and a half by 2.5.

When do I get time and a half?

Under most awards, the first 2 or 3 hours of overtime on a weekday are paid at time and a half, then double time. Some awards also pay time and a half on Saturdays or Sundays; see weekend pay rates.

What is double time and a half?

2.5 times your rate, the usual public holiday rate under many awards: $69.53 on $27.81 an hour.

Do casuals get time and a half on top of the loading?

It depends on the award. Many set a casual penalty rate that includes the loading; a casual hospitality worker on $26.44 base gets 150% on Saturdays, not 1.5 × the casual rate.
