Transition to retirement

A transition to retirement income stream lets you draw part of your super as a pension from age 60 while you keep working.

Key facts

  • A transition to retirement income stream (TRIS) lets you draw on your super from preservation age (60) without retiring.
  • Each year you must take at least the minimum (4% of the balance under 65) and no more than 10% of the balance at the start of the year or on 1 July.
  • Lump sums generally can't be taken from preserved benefits.
  • Earnings on the assets supporting a TRIS are taxed at 15% until it moves to the retirement phase.
  • It moves to the retirement phase automatically at 65, or earlier when you tell your fund you've retired or met another condition of release.
