How it works

Common questions

How do I calculate my hours worked?

Take your finish time away from your start time, then take off any unpaid breaks. 9:00am to 5:30pm is 8 hours 30 minutes; less a 30-minute unpaid lunch break that's 8 hours paid.

How do I convert minutes to decimal hours?

Divide the minutes by 60. 15 minutes is 0.25 hours, 30 minutes 0.5 and 45 minutes 0.75, so 7 hours 45 minutes is 7.75 hours. Payslips and payroll systems usually use decimal hours.

How do I work out hours for a night shift?

If the finish time is earlier than the start time, the shift ends the next day. 10pm to 6am is 8 hours. This calculator handles that automatically.

Are breaks paid?

Rest breaks (usually 10 minutes) are normally paid and meal breaks are normally unpaid, but your award or agreement sets the rules. Only enter unpaid breaks here.

How much do I take home for a week's hours?

Enter your hourly rate. For example, 5 days of 9:00 to 5:30 with a 30-minute break is 40 hours; at $30.00 an hour that's $1,200.00 before tax and about $998.00 after the tax withheld in 2026–27.

How long must my employer keep timesheets?

Employers must keep time and wages records, including hours worked, for 7 years under the Fair Work Act. Keep your own record too, so you can check your payslip.
