How it works
- The Cleaning Services Award covers contract cleaning businesses and their cleaners, including event cleaning and trolley collection contractors.
- Cleaners employed directly by a hotel, shop or other business are under that industry's award, for example retail or hospitality.
- Overtime is time and a half for the first 2 hours Monday to Saturday, then double time.
- Super is paid on top of these rates.
Common questions
How much does a cleaner get paid in Australia?
A Level 1 contract cleaner gets at least $27.08 an hour full time, $31.14 part time and $33.85 casual from 1 July 2026 under the Cleaning Services Award. Full time that's $1,028.90 a week, about $53,503 a year.
Why do part-time cleaners get a higher rate?
The award adds a 15% allowance to every ordinary hour a part-time employee works, so a Level 1 part-timer gets $31.14 instead of $27.08.
What is the casual cleaner rate?
$33.85 an hour at Level 1, including the 25% casual loading. Casuals get $47.39 on Saturdays, $60.93 on Sundays and $74.47 on public holidays.
Do cleaners get paid more for early morning or night work?
Yes. A Monday to Friday shift that starts before 6am or finishes after 6pm is paid at $31.14 an hour for a full-time Level 1 cleaner, and a non-rotating shift that finishes after midnight and at or before 8am at $35.20.
Does the Cleaning Services Award cover all cleaners?
No. It covers cleaners employed by contract cleaning businesses (office, shopping centre, house and event cleaning companies). Cleaners employed directly by a hotel, shop or other business are covered by that industry's award.
When do cleaner award rates go up?
Each year from the first full pay period on or after 1 July. Next: 1 July 2027 (Annual Wage Review).
