Common questions

What is the payroll tax rate in SA?

No payroll tax if annual Australian wages are $1,500,000 or less. Above that, a $600,000 deduction comes off wages and the rest is taxed at a rate that rises from 0% at $1,500,000 to 4.95% at $1,700,000, then stays at 4.95%.

What is the SA payroll tax threshold?

$1,500,000 a year in 2026-27. Employers must register when Australian taxable wages exceed $125,000 a month; the deduction is up to $50,000 a month.

Does the calculator handle grouping and interstate wages?

No. It assumes one employer, not grouped, paying all its wages in the state for the full year. Grouped or interstate employers share the threshold in proportion to their wages in each state; check the revenue office's rules or use its calculator.

Is payroll tax paid by employees?

No. It's a state tax on employers' wage bills; it doesn't come out of employees' pay.
